The Presbyterian minister who grew National Church Residences into the nation’s largest nonprofit developer of affordable senior housing has died in the retirement community that started it all.

The Columbus-based nonprofit announced Friday that retired founder John R. Glenn died Thursday at the age of 89 in Waverly’s Bristol Village Retirement Community, NCR’s flagship site. Glenn, who retired in 1989, founded NCR as Ohio Church Residences in 1961 with four other churches.

Nearly 50 years later, NCR runs more than 320 communities with 22,000 units in 28 states and Puerto Rico. Its largest Columbus-area retirement communities are the 200-unit Hilltop Senior Village and the 150-unit Stygler Village in Gahanna. NCR also runs one of the three largest assisted-living facilities in the region: Traditions at Mill Run in Hilliard.

CEO Tom Slemmer said in a statement that Glenn “truly loved this organization and every single person it touches.”

“Today we mourn the loss of a founder, a minister and a dear friend,” Slemmer said. “We are all blessed to have been a part of his mission, and equally as important, to have the honor of being part of his legacy.”
