Such a truly great discussion you all have happening. I like the mix of great and correct details together with a few intellectual thoughts. It truly is fantastic to be able to finally come across excellent articles where I think I could believe within the text as well as respect the people that publish it. With all the internet waste nowadays I always value finding some real voices on the internet. Thank you for posting and continue the good work, please!!

Your article was particularly exciting, with its emphasis on the need for a healthy aging focus which empowers older people to age in place successfully. It is very much in sync with the COLLAGE program, a venture of Kendal Outreach and Hebrew Senior Life in Boston. COLLAGE will have a booth at AAHSA this year (#1342). This link http://collageaging.org/Site/docs/CollagePgmProfile_Web_102609.pdf will take you to information we will be making available to AAHSA members. You can also find more information at www.collageaging.org. Based upon your always astute observations, I thought you'd be interested in seeing what Kendal's latest "big hairy idea" is.

maria,
great article...remember "purple haze?" all those years ago? and "boomertown?" well, we're doing it at mackenzie architects. i'm surprised to see that you didn't make any reference to the interest in old-fashioned neighborhoods that also included other generations...is it your conclusion that boomers still want age-segregation? because we see this as part of the bankrupt model...i would love to talk with you at length about this...as we're working on some very innovative projects and beginning master planning on an innovative (possibly multi-generational) project here in vermont that is an expansion of a continuing care community where the owner wants to create more of an old-fashioned neighborhood that would include children and families adjacent to her cont. care facility....also, the projects that you featured via photos in your article did NOT look "modest" by any stretch of the imagination, but maybe that is just because as highrises they look so--well, expensive.
i'll email you and hope all's well. i'm glad i'm still on your radar screen.
love,
